Jim Lewis, PhD

Dr. Jim Lewis works for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Mississippi Valley Division as the Director of the Mississippi River Science and Technology (S&T) Office. He also serves as the Principal Science Advisor to the Mississippi River Commission. Jim provides scientific advice and answers for a wide range of topics including environmental, geotechnical, hydraulic, sediment, and hydrologic issues. He also manages the Mississippi River Geomorphology and Potamology (G&P) Program, leading research activities to understand the Mississippi River. The G&P Program supports the USACE mission of efficient management and operation of the Mississippi River and Tributaries Project to provide navigation and flood risk management in an environmentally responsible manner. Jim has previously worked for the Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory of the Engineer Research and Development Center and the Detroit District of USACE. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in Civiland Environmental Engineering, specializing in hydraulics.
